The Faerie Coffins
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Isaac M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/15/2020 11:20:43

The Faerie Coffins can be a nice first adventure or a side adventure depending on what you want for your group. The adventure gives enough material for DM that makes it coherent and understandable. The thought and insight given about the lore related to the fey is really well done, which gives some idea on how much research the writer did. I love the balance for investigation, social interaction, and combat encounter, which should give every player a chance to shine and enjoy things.

To Have & To Hold

A surprisingly short adventure but so compact and filled with enough material for a one-shot. You get a lil' bit mystery and some exploration and interactions. I might say that DMs need to put some stuff from themselves, but at least the adventure gives enough material as I mentioned. If your group is looking for a quick side adventure, To Have & To Hold might be it.

Following the Tracks
Publisher: Wilderling

Date Added: 12/15/2020 11:09:44

As a fan of Pathfinder 1e ('tho I haven't come back to it for more than a year now), I find it nice to see this adventure released. Following the track feels like a safari, an exploration into an intriguing and unique world. Exploring the world through the story, interacting with the NPCs, and of course, the Lilipotamus, is something that is a breath of fresh air. The writer's background clearly has a hand on dealing with the topic and theme of the adventure. It's a great adventure and I'm hoping to see more adventure focusing on more magical creatures like this.

Smog on the Water
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Isaac M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/08/2020 06:01:00

Running a mystery adventure is one thing. Writing a mystery adventure is a whole another beast. Smog on the Water provides enough contents, great story, and an intriguing mystery that DMs can run. Featuring interesting adversaries & NPCs such as the Yugoloths, the kuo-toa, and a drow, this adventure provides challenging things that the player characters can face. Using the Cloudkill spell as a plot point is a smart way that's uncommonly done in adventures. The module also gives much information on how to deal with certain encounters, and even how to RP the NPCs, which is surely a welcome addition to any modules. I would also like to say that the art is nice and the layout is readable. Though there are some wordings, sentences, and terms (e.g. using PC as a term instead of characters, adventurers, or heroes) that can be revised.

I personally feel that there should be more background information that needs to be fleshed out regarding each the main NPCs intentions and some other unanswered questions, but the information given in the module should suffice.

Despite that, the adventure module seems to be a good one coming from a first time adventure writer. It would be nice to see an updated version, or even an expanded one. I'm sure this adventure can kick off a whole another adventure on its own.

A Town Called Mud: The Haunted Mine

A wild (or weird) west fantasy adventure? Sign me up!

This adventure brings a whole another thing to D&D that feels fresh and exciting. The creator has made sure that the product captures the western feel from the art, layout, font, and maps. Despite the simple story, get rid of the ghosts haunting the mines, and deal with bandits, this adventure can be a ton of fun if handled properly. The Adventure Primer section gives stuff for DMs to consider in order to make this adventure feels really wild/weird west. I would like to see an expanded version of this adventure, maybe a sequel or something else in this world.

Thanks for the review Isaac. As this was part of the RPG Writer Workshop, I wanted to focus on telling an interesting story based on a simple premise - I wrote the whole thing in the space of 30 days! I fully intend for there to be sequels with more adventure in Mud, and maybe to one day to revise the adventure when I have more practice and the resources to commission art! First, I think I'll be looking at other ideas I have knocking around my head - try and take a break from Mud for more fun adventures to percolate!

The Devil's Workshop
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Isaac M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/05/2020 19:57:37

As a starting adventure, this product works as it is. Despite the lack of art and minimalist style, the adventure presents an intriguing story. What makes me happy about this is the fact that the adventure is heavily designed for one-on-one play (DM and one player). I believe there should be more adventures like this, that feels really personal and can be more immersive. There's a lot of room for improvement, but with some tweaks, this adventure can be enjoyable to run. I look forward to see an update to the product and would gladly raise my rating accordingly.

Road to Rock
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

More and more, RPG Writer Workshop has trained a lot of new writers that have fresh takes on adventures/scenarios writing. Road to Rock is one of the examples. Just from the cover, art, and layout alone, you can tell that this adventure heavily leans on band and road trip elements that feels refreshing. The story itself is something right out of band's documentary or band movies. And I'm a fan that the adventure leans more towards social encounter and exploration, showing that D&D doesn't need to heavily lean on combat and mechanics related to that.

I really recommend this adventure if you're looking for something that feels really different to broaden your horizon.

Black Vines of Night
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Isaac M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/05/2020 19:46:32

As a Cosmic Horror adventure writer, I might be biased with this product. But from the get-go, the mention of Atropus, and the heavy mentions of Cosmic Horror, existential dread, Mind Flayers, undead, really feel that the creator knows what they're doing with this adventure. Also, setting it (literally) outside Toril or other well-known planets in the Prime Material Plane feels refreshing. And having Spelljammers in this setting takes this adventure to a whole another level.

I personally feel that there should be more adventures like this. Cosmic Horror is something that's hard to tackle, but for those who understand it, it can be great, as seen by other DMsGuild products such as Call of Atropus, Blackwater Redux, and much more.

I recommend this adventure if you're looking for something different, or if you're a fan of Cosmic Horror (or horror in general).

In The Land Of The Dead God
Publisher: Seedling Games
by Isaac M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/05/2020 19:40:22

Dinosaurs always fascinate me since I was a child, and the creator has made an adventure that includes them in a great way. In The Land Of The Dead God is a great exploration adventure that shows how well-thought and fleshed out the world is. And with the links provided in the module, readers can find more details about the world, if they wish to do so. It totally works as a one-shot. And it absolutely works as a starting point for a whole campaign. It's nice to see that the creator describes ways on how to do so, and even mentions that it can be tied up to the creator's previous work. Despite the simple/straightforward story, Ithe starvation, climate change, drought, reckless looting, they speak to me and feels real, but presented in a delicate way that fits the adventure.

I recommend people to check this adventure out.

Naga's Fury
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Isaac M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/05/2020 19:32:57

First of all, I want to say that I am an Indonesian creator who is co-leading a project for a D&D campaign setting. This makes me critical of people who put out contents related to my culture.

But I have to say, Naga's Fury shows that the creator pays attention to the source material, which is pre-colonial Indonesian history, culture, folklore & mythology. The Hindu influences are really spot on, that is in line with pre-colonial Indonesia. The creator has fleshed out the lore pretty well, 'tho I understand combining several influences (e.g. Hindu, local Indonesian ethnicity such as Batak, etc) might take away the essence and makes the product feel like a mish-mash of influences. But I'd say that the creator has find a way to balance it out. The earlier section of this adventure describes the lore to give ideas for those who are not familiar with pre-colonial Indonesian, and I appreciate that.

The story is epic and really feel like something big, 'tho I'd say it's better to expand it more than just keep it as a one-shot. I can see that the creator seems to be aiming on something bigger, but due to constraints can only be made as a one-shot.

I'm happy that the creator gives multiple ways for DM on how to approach certain situations and encounters.

The maps are amazing.

I can't wait to see more of this world and an expansion of this adventure. 'Tho I'd like to see if the creators can focus on the native Indonesian influences.

It's a great one-shot and I recommend people to buy this if they're looking for something that's non-European, similar to Kara-Tur, or inspired by Asian influences.

12 Christmas Slays

The jolly spirit of Christmas is in this product. 12 Christmas-themed monsters/creatures! The monster statblocks and their features are well-designed, fitting thematically to Christmas. The layout is really good, making the product easily readable and interesting to look at ('tho I'd prefer if it has bookmarks, even though there are not a lot of pages). The art is the best thing about this product, ranging from cute-looking to amazing. Also, if you're not a fan of slaying these monsters, then you can totally include them to be your PC's friends or allies!

Just like the title says, Organized Chaos is basically chaos organized in a well-written adventure. A lot of weird and crazy encounters can be encountered in this adventure module, supported by interesting classical illustrations from different cultures that makes the adventure more chaotically organized. The layout makes it easy to read, which I really appreciate. A cast of "chaotic" (not necessarily in terms of alignment) characters that will surely create some bonkers encounters.

Adventure into The Lost Vaults
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Isaac M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/02/2020 02:08:55

An awesome dungeon crawling adventure that features TONS of magic items. The hooks make sure that it's easy to grasp the characters into the nitty-gritty of this adventure. The dungeon itself is well-designed, with interesting layout and cool traps to challenge the characters. The multiple enemies featured in this adventure gives different vibe to the encounters. And gosh, the magic items. The adventure is worth buying for the awesome magic items itself that can be used for your home group.

Another proof that RPG Writer Workshop keeps on developing new community/indie creators that push the boundary on what an adventure can be.

Another good thing that came out of the RPG Writer Workshop.

To Undo the Glue is a bit goofy and light-hearted, which is totally fine. A different take on D&D adventures. The stained glass artwork that decorates the adventure is interesting to look at. The adventure gives an easy hook for player characters to be grasped by the story. It's filled with interesting cast of characters, which I have to say, my favorites are the djinni and the genasi. And the addition of a special playlist in this adventure is so cool.

'Cos I'm Harpy
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Isaac M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/02/2020 01:30:04

I enjoy the fact that this adventure is pretty non-linear but not too sandboxy, as it gives a lot of options and choices for the players to approach in different ways. And the focus on roleplay and non-combat resolution are a breath of fresh air. The color coded words makes readability better and makes it easy to understand what is being referred. The encountersare varied, making the whole adventure can be replayed for DMs who want to run it again for different groups (and the encounters can also be used for other adventures, if they want to). The maps are amazing. The layout feels rustic and fits the vibe of the adventure. And the addition of a new player race is a welcomed feature.

This adventure proves that the RPG Writer Workshop has been a gift that keeps on giving for community created contents as new writers are making new stuff that feel different and refreshing.
