Fantasy House, Free Version

Beware: this schematics lacks a few tabs that you're supposed to think to cut out yourself or add when you glue the print-out to cardboard. It's the only way to fix the roof on the walls and the door frame on the front wall, unless you use a foam core as a basis. The instructions mention this, but it's not clear why these tabs weren't just marked on the schematics like the other ones.

Also, the schematics mention the "ornate beam tab", but this piece is just not here. I guess it's a left-in reference from a bigger paper model which this house is originally a part of.

This is supposed to be an entry model. The way it is, it's rather confusing, and a poor display of publisher's superior quality.

Even though it's a beta playtest version, it's very playable and presents a framework for numerous challenging adventures. The quality is that of a final product, pleasant to read, clear, structured, with just the right depth. The book is rich with gentle touches that you won't notice but will miss in many other small products.

I never played Original D&D and so can't compare the game to OD&D or verify their compatibility, but I see many attractive differences from other old-school games. One major benefit is selection of races and classes - not the vanilla human-dwarf-elf, but ten races from both sides of the usual moral scale; as for classes, there are also ten, including such picks as cultist and knight (inspired by Medieval more so than pop culture). Races and classes are written to really act their concept: for example, the knight lowers foe's morale rolls; the elf can't be surprised in forest setting; and the cultist perceives others' willpower, which is useful for interactions and combat. All the different things classes and races can do is a rich source for adventure ideas. When you have lizardmen who are great swimmers, you can have flooded dungeons. When you have knaves and robbers with black market connections, you can have black market.

The game gently stirs the game onto treasure-hunting, problem-solving, dungeon-raiding track. There's no focus on Good vs. Evil: "evil" races are not really different when your goal is surviving the dungeon. A wild random encounter with said races doesn't have to lead to bloodshed - with luck it can lead to a retainer contract. There is a solid framework for non-combat interactions and dealing with various hazards, and the combat itself is simple enough without exotic abstractions. The setting is technologically primitive, with no high-level NPCs and grand cities to take time from basic adventures. With a hint of forgotten apocalypse, it provides great potential for glory and treasure.

All and all, I think this game really deserves some glory among retro-bunch.

The Pretty Red Flower, with a Single Thorn
Publisher: Jessica Jimerson

Even though the book has 71 colorful pages (or 35 spreads, since all pages are designed to be read as spreads), it doesn't look like it's taken a lot of effort from the author. Images lack details that children love to feed eyes upon. The style is that of a young artist-in-training, and it doesn't look like it's deliberate (but I have to note the beautiful flower). The story doesn't follow traditional structure, or any structure. The chosen font is similar to hand writing and is not easy to read by a child (and sometimes it's lost on a darker background).

If it's a first children book of an emerging author, it shouldn't cost $11. For this price, I recommend "Verdi" by Janell Cannon as a story about accepting yourself.

Creator Reply:
Well Maria, sorry you disliked the story. I think the primary issue is the target audience is for children, therefore children would enjoy it a bit more than an adult. Although the book recently got a professional review and it was all completely positive, conflicting just about everything you said, from the fonts being clear to read, to the art being professional (you can review it for yourself here): http://www.toonaripost.com/2012/08/life-style/the-pretty-red-flower-with-a-single-thorn-book-review/#cb=f219a9d93ddc506&origin=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.toonaripost.com%2Ff338702814bb42e&domain=www.toonaripost.com&relation=parent&frame=f29f0f0b992c494&error=unknown_user Also even though the font is bold, and in black (readable to a young child) its more charming when the parent reads to the child in for any bedtime tale. As for the cost of $11.00 the book with go up for print shortly on here. But regardless you cannot complain as you got the book for free without charge (I set it that way for the professional reviewers to get a copy for a day).

Familiars RPG
Publisher: Ganesha Games
by Maria M. [Verified Purchaser]

This RPG is just what it seems from the cover and title: both funny and deep, easy to pick up and rich in play, brilliantly styled for playing familiars in witch hunt setting. Species (most of them are on the cover) are well-written and have a spark. There are about 30 illustrations all drawn by author, which set the mood very well. System is logical and houserule-friendly. The book lacks Quick Reference, but it's not a big deal.

I never hoped to find such system when I googled for "familiars rpg". Glad I did.
