NOTE: Between my review and today this PDF changed it's name to The Shaman.

This one is a 9 page PDF (7 pages content) with a PWYW price suggested at $1.00. So right there near the 10 cents per page guideline I am looking at. My issue with this one is it conflates "Witch Doctor" and "Voodoo" together. Granted, so has Hollywood and western culture for years. In the 7 pages, the class is presented with three different "Occult Practices." The class seems playable, but if this is to replace the various tribal shamans or tribal priests I would have gone a different direction myself.

The layout is good, but the color background will drain your ink. The art is good. The pieces I recognize are from the DMSGuild collection, the ones I don't do not have a credit attached.

I would like to see a Voodoo-like class done right someday.

I mostly like this take on the Witch Doctor but it strikes me as slightly behind other offerings in terms of character power and in need of some tweaks.

  • If you make a melee/ranged, you are hindered by not having a 2nd attack
  • If you make a caster, you are hindered by spell slots and lack of boosts like Warlock Invocations

To my eye, this lack of power coincides with the very confusing Witch Doctor power call Cursed Weaponry. This seems to only allow a player to convert weapon dmg to another type of damage (i.e., Fire) ... but you have to burn a spell slot to do it. I cannot image a reason I would do this.

If Cursed Weaponry were tweaked to provide other value to the Witch Doctor beyond shifting dmg type ... it could go a long way towards leveling the power of the WD with other offerings.

My suggestion would be to look at the potential roles a WD can play and tried to align Cursed Weapon options towards those goals.

  • Melee: Cursed Weaponry provides shifting dmg type in addition to weapon dmg
  • Ranged: Spirits guide the attack hit more easily? (Empowering Sharpshooter feat)
  • Summoner: Hand the weapon to a summon and let them do bonus dmg?
